Business Tech Tip: Identity Theft and Security
Business Tech Tip: Identity Theft and Security; Customer Data Loss /
Theft, Identity theft Coverage, Experian, Equifax, Home Owners Insurance
Policy, Bank of America
Crossroads strives to stay at the head of the technological curve, rather
than play catch-up after a problem has occurred. We continuously keep you informed on the latest trends and technologies
to keep your network as up-to-date and efficient as possible. The
following networking tip is provided to help make your information system
network more productive and profitable.
Identity Theft and Security
Many large companies have reported customer data loss or theft in the
past few months, including:
- A computer backup tape containing account information of more than
200,000 Ameritrade clients was apparently lost or accidentally destroyed
while being shipped
- DSW (Designer Shoe Warehouse) reports 1.4 million customers IDs
stolen
- Bank of America loses 1.2 million customer account records
There are numerous actions you can take to protect your identity. Some
actions are extreme; for example, using cash only is one way to protect yourself, but not
practical.
Your home owners insurance policy may have an Identity Theft Coverage option.
Call your insurance agent and look into it. I found it to be cheaper than
what
the credit card or other companies offers.
Check out
Experian
and their list of numerous ways to protect your identity. The
Equifax Credit Bureau is also an excellent source of information about
identity theft as it relates to your credit report and tips on how to
prevent it.
