Editorial: Bringing Indiana's Infrastructure into Modern Times
The
New "Wired World" of "Fiber and Frequencies" Will Support the
Businesses and High Paying Jobs of Tomorrow
Governor Daniels in his state of the state speech on
January 11th spoke of the need to bring
Indiana's infrastructure into modern times. Not just the
roads and bridges, but the new "wired world"
infrastructure of "fiber and frequencies" that will
support the businesses and high paying jobs of tomorrow.
I applaud his leadership and wholeheartedly support his
call to action. To take advantage of the
infrastructure businesses must be ready and capable of
taking advantage of this infrastructure. Are businesses
in the position to take advantage of the technology? Do
Indiana businesses have the capital to invest in new
processes, new technologies, new products or services
that can make use of the infrastructure? I have met
numerous business owners who are eager to improve and
increase their business' ability to successfully compete
and win. There are businesses ready and eagerly awaiting
the arrival of this new infrastructure. This is great
news on several fronts. It is good for the economy, and
for the people of Indiana.
This will provide Indiana businesses the opportunity
to deliver premium-priced services and products. I
cringe every time I see a "business success" article in
the Indianapolis Star or IBJ that touts a business
success with the following theme: "Indiana company
(insert company name) delivers superior
products/services for (insert % discount) of what the
competition from (insert state) to win the business."
Being the low-cost provider is not a desirable position
in business, and it is arguably not a viable option when
you are competing globally.
Another opportunity is that business owners can utilize
this new technology infrastructure to improve, even
reconstruct, their business models, and their product
and service offerings. This can be an opportunity to
prevent the exodus of college educated youth from
Indiana by providing new exciting opportunities to
partake in these challenging changes.
Technology-savvy young employees that demand, drive,
and even manage these business changes are missing. I am
not speaking solely of the computer and information
technology graduates. I am speaking of every student
that graduates that has an understanding of how to use
various technologies and information management.
Businesses that reach out and hire young, motivated, talented
employees will benefit from the utilization of the
expanding new
technology infrastructure.
You are absolutely correct Governor;
"business-as-usual" will never get it done! But be
assured, there are people within the state who support
your initiatives, and appreciate your leadership, and
are eager to put a new look on Indiana business.
