To help avoid losing confidential information, follow these tips:

If possible, keep proprietary or confidential information off your laptop.
Physically secure your laptop. (Lock it in your office or a storage area.)
Do not store passwords on laptops
Back-up your files and store them in a secure place rather than on the laptop.
Engrave your name or company name on your laptop (or PDA or cell phone.)
Be careful at airports. Never check the computer baggage.
Do not send your laptop through the X-ray machine until you are the next to pass through the metal detector, and the passage is unobstructed.
