Microsoft Vista Update: Vista Performance Monitoring
Microsoft Vista Performance Monitoring, Windows Performance
Diagnostic Console, Monitor System Performance, Customize Data
Capture Logs, View Performance Data
Microsoft's new operating system, Vista, allows you to monitor system performance
through its Windows Performance Diagnostic Console snap-in,
which allows an administrator to:
- Customize the data captured in logs
- Define thresholds for alerts and automatic action
- Generate reports
- View performance data in a number of ways
While these are all features of previous versions of the Performance Monitor,
new
features include:
- Improved User Interface
- Reliability Monitor
For more details on Reliability Monitor visit the Windows Vista Technical Library.

How Vista Performance Monitoring Works
The Reliability Analysis Component (RAC) runs as a pre-configured
scheduled task. The RAC collects the data that is displayed by the
Reliability Monitor.
When you first install Windows Vista the RAC automatically begins
to collect data. Your system may need to run for at least one day to display the collected data in the System Stability
Chart.

Check Your Computer's Reliability with Vista Performance
Monitoring
One of the features of Vista Performance Monitoring is a
Reliability Monitor designed for easy analysis of collected data. The two
steps to using the Reliability Monitor include:
- Creating a Data Collector
Set (DCS) from performance counters
- Viewing the Reliability Monitor
You can create Data Collector Sets in a variety of ways, including using a template (such as the provided System Overview template).
A particularly powerful and convenient method is to convert a collection of performance counters you are already using in
for the Performance Monitor directly to a DCS. You can then save the DCS for use at any time, on any other computer.
